What are the Symptoms?
Immediately after sustaining a brain injury, a person may experience a loss of consciousness or a few moments of confusion. This is usually followed by other symptoms such as a headache, ringing in the ears, loss of balance, blurring of vision, and nausea. A brain injury victim can become sensitive to light and to loud noises, have short-term memory loss, difficulty finding words, and can lose their train of thought easily. Difficulty concentrating, processing information, and organizing the day is common. He or she may also experience major or minor mood swings, irritability, and sleep disturbance.
Brain injury symptoms can also sometimes occur in a mind that still functions well on other levels. The injury can often be subtle whereby a casual observer cannot see the symptoms but a spouse, friend or relative may detect them quickly. Realizing that they cannot do what they used to do, a victim can experience frustration, loss of self-esteem, and often depression.
